"At the October 1845 conference in Nauvoo, seventy-year-old Lucy Mack Smith was invited to speak. She spoke of being the "mother of eleven children, eight of whom were boys." She asked those assembled whether she should still be referred to as "Mother Smith," an affectionate title given to her by the Saints, since all but one son had died. "She wished to know of the congregation (assembled at the conference) whether they considered her a mother in Israel." Brigham Young, in response to her query arose and asked the assembled, "All who consider Mother Smith as a mother in Israel, signify it by saying yes! - One universal 'yes' rang throughout."
